Jesus Christ, Flight Attendant

I’ve had an outline of this post as a sermon in my mind for about two years, but a blog post works just as well, and I was finally compelled to write about it after my morning devotional.
Anyone who knows me knows I love being being organized. Like, own-three-planners-and-two-calendars organized. I get a weird satisfaction out of planning my next three months. With planning often comes worry. Anyone who knows me also knows I am a worrier. My brain never stops and it’s often worried about what time I’ll get to bed or who I’ll run into at Target in my sweatpants or how I did on my last test.
And I know that worrying is the inability to trust God. It’s a constant thing I’m trying to work on, because deep down I always know that God is gonna take care of it. But the every day details of life tend to bog down my mind, and then test my trust in the Big Guy.
Today, I went to YoungLife morning devotional and we studied John Chapter 4. There’s a story in verses 46-54 in which a nobleman travels several days to ask Jesus to heal his dying son. Jesus tells the man to go home, and that his son will be healed. The man then spends several days walking back home, where he finds out his son has been healed exactly like Jesus said he would be. While I was reading the passage, it hit me that this man really did trust Jesus. He trusted Jesus’ ability and he was willing to walk back home for two days without knowing about his son because he trusted Jesus. Too often, I pray to Jesus to take care of me and my problems but the way I live my life says differently.
As I was reading this chapter and thinking about worry and the way it impacts my relationship with Jesus, I thought of flying on an airplane.
Let me explain.
My family loves to travel a lot, and we often fly by airplane. On certain flights when we hit turbulence, my worrying mind can’t help but get a little freaked out. Whenever my brothers or I would do worry, my mom would say, “Look at the fight attendants. If they’re not freaking out, then you shouldn’t be either.”
It’s that simple with Jesus, too. Jesus isn’t freaking out about our future, y’all!! So why should we? The Creator of the Universe, the l knowing God is in charge of our plans and we need to start trusting the Big Man! That is a saying that helps me remember day to day that Jesus is deserving of all my trust.
“But now, this is what the Lord says— he who created you, Jacob, he who formed you, Israel: “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine.” // Isaiah 43:1
